Senior Management
Any organisation gains its ethos and culture from those who are at its head. If you have worked in any business you will know that two companies that might work in the same sector, may even complete the same function, can be wholly different in every way. The same is true for any school. They may lie within the same town, city or local authority. They may only be a few minutes’ walk from each other. In terms of how they are run and the culture that they have they could possibly be worlds apart. The reason for this is that school’s head teachers, those in charge are completely responsible for how they are functioned. Yes, the head must answer to those above them, but only in explanations of how the school is performing results-wise. If they can explain these to their superiors in terms that will satisfy those superiors then the free reign will continue. This is not to say that schools that are performing well based on the league tables are free to do as they please while schools at the bottom of the league tables are micromanaged. What it means is that as long as you justify your position in the league tables to local authority bosses then the head teacher is free to continue as they were for the previous year. In this chapter I will speak about what sort of leadership there is in schools and how this affects both the teachers and pupils within it.
It is important for any head teacher to have a team around them that do not just buy into their ideas for the school but actively believe in the ethos the head is trying to promote. With this support from those working closest to them the head can then have a lot more influence throughout the school. How the head achieves this support network can be done in different ways. It is common when one head teacher leaves to be replaced by another that the previous deputies will also be replaced within the first eighteen months of the new head arriving. This means that the new head can mould their deputies around what they wish them to be. It also means that there is less of a change for the senior staff members directly below the head teacher to remember the “good old days” of the previous head: therefore not speak of the way things used to be. Of course there is also the other possibility where the new head brings with them a freshness that might have been lacking from the old head. This can stop the stagnation of a school whilst motivating its senior management to improve on what they were doing before. In whatever way the head manages to get the senior management onside it is a must to achieve. The deputies are the lieutenants to the chief. It is their job to adhere to any new policies and to make sure those further down the school, such foot soldiers as regular teachers, are also complying.
